Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland is thrilled to announce that Jessica Joseph is the Gold Award Girl Scout from Carl Junction. Jessica earned this award for her extraordinary action addressing the lack of proper baggage for children in the foster program. When Jessica found out children were using trash bags to pack up their belongings when moving into the foster program, she knew she wanted to step in to make a change. She concluded that the best way to do this would be to host her very own bag drive. Jessica said, “Having a bag to move your belongings in is just one less thing they will have to worry about as they make difficult transitions to new homes.” Because of this, she chose to reach out to her community and on social media to encourage people to donate new or lightly used suitcases to the cause. To spread awareness of the lack of personal suitcases in the foster program, she started her own Instagram account to share posts and videos informing her audience about the impact it can make on the child’s life. No child should have to use a trash bag to move their personal items. As Jessica says, “Trash bags are for garbage, not suitcases.” We could not agree more. Thank you, Jessica, friends, and community members who helped improve the children in your community's lives for the better.
