Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland is thrilled to announce that Emily Kirby is the Gold Award Girl Scout from Cape Girardeau for her extraordinary action in addressing alternative hobbies for the youth at CoNEXTions Community Counseling Center to use as a new form of expressing themselves.
She chose her project to help youth that do not normally have access to discover different types of hobbies. Emily set up classes with the CoNEXTions Community Counseling Center so that the youth can come, experience, and learn about different hobbies and skills. It is her hope that by teaching them new hobbies, they will develop a healthy coping strategy during stressful situations, enjoy their time together, and challenge them to learn more. Emily said, “By offering them a positive opportunity, I hope they will see how impactful these skills can be. Additionally, I hope the youth feel valued and hopeful since someone is taking the time and resources to teach them.” It is thoughtful Girl Scouts like Emily who remind us to look out for others and see what we can do to make their day a little better each day!
