The Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland Council, Inc. employs staff members to contribute managerial and specialist expertise, research capability, continuity and support to the delivery of Girl Scout program to girls through volunteers. Volunteer Services Specialist

Position Summary

The Volunteer Services Specialist is responsible for planning, designing, implementing and evaluating an education program for all volunteers to help them successfully deliver the Girl Scout program to girls.  

Council Expectations of Employee:

o Adheres to council policies and procedures
o Acts as a role model within and outside the council
o Performs duties as workload necessitates
o Behaves and communicates in a positive and respectful way
o Communicates regularly with supervisor about Department issues
o Demonstrates flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize work load

Major Accountabilities:  

  • Participate in the strategic and tactical planning processes to assist in the formulation of council goals, objectives and action steps related to the adult development function.
  • Provide support to and collaborate with the Membership and Leadership Program Specialists to implement a total volunteer management system.
  • Serve as facilitator for volunteer development trainings of both volunteers and facilitators.  Attend volunteer development trainings across the council jurisdiction as representative of the council when not facilitating.
  • Coordinate all details pertaining to volunteer development opportunities, including dates, times, locations and facilitators.
  • Update all volunteer development forms, policies and procedures as needed.
  • Prepare New Leader Orientation to ensure availability for staff and volunteers.
  • Prepare and coordinate Service Team training materials.
  • Prepare New Leader and Returning Leader packets and assist in the distribution of information to volunteers.
  • Assist in the yearly volunteer recognitions celebration.
  • Implement a variety of training delivery systems to meet volunteer needs.
  • Submit accurate reports and information requested in a timely manner.
  • Provide support to council resource development programs.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    Manages a core team of adult development volunteers. Responsibilities include recruiting and training volunteers; directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


    Position Qualifications:

    Bachelor's degree in related field or experience commensurate with degree; excellent knowledge of adult learning and adult education theories; computer literacy and technical knowledge of computer software programs such as Word, Access, Publisher, Excel and the internet; ability to meet people with ease; ability to write and edit effectively; ability to communicate the written and spoken word with tact, diplomacy, and/or authority when necessary; good organizational skills, well disciplined, able to meet deadlines, self starter, able to work under pressure of many priorities and deadlines; ability to work effectively with volunteers; ability to work well as a part of a team; knowledge of long-range planning process; good managerial skills; must have highly developed interpersonal skills; unequivocal commitment to pluralism; ability to meet travel requirements, including night, weekend and overnight travel; valid driver's license; access to properly insured vehicle in working condition.

     

     

     


    Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

    Job Summary

    Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland is the product of the joining of resources and ambitions of five legacy councils. The council is seeking a highly motivated and dynamic executive to continue to unify and lead the council by embracing its vision as the premier leadership development experience for girls in central and southern Missouri, southeast Kansas, and northeast Oklahoma. Girl Scouting helps girls discover their own sense of self, connect with others in an increasingly diverse world, and take action to make the world a better place.

    The new CEO, in partnership with the board, will be charged with expanding opportunities for girls in the communities served. While honoring the traditions of Girl Scouting, the CEO will provide highly visible and dynamic leadership to advance a vibrant and challenging environment for girl and adult members and volunteers from all the communities it serves.

    Reporting to the council's board of directors, the CEO will bring leadership, strategic direction, and vision to the council, capitalizing on the strengths of its 4,900-plus volunteers and 62 staff to meet the needs of 17,400-plus girls. The CEO promotes Girl Scout visibility and is an ambassador of Girl Scouting in the council's jurisdiction, the "go-to" person on girls' issues in central and southern Missouri. Key objectives include increasing membership in all communities, building a foundation of fiscal strength based on diversification of income, and taking the council to a new level of operations in a digital and media-savvy environment. Essential is the ability to engender support in the various communities encompassed by the council: small cities, suburbs, and rural areas. In addition to a normal office schedule, this position requires evening and weekend meetings and event participation as well as travel for professional conferences and leadership and management development opportunities.

    The CEO will have significant functional responsibility for fundraising and development initiatives, management of senior leadership staff, and the achievement of established diversity goals for council operations. Additional responsibilities include financial accountability for the $4.7 million annual budget and substantial property accountability for its headquarters, a satellite office, four service centers, and 11 camp properties. The successful CEO will inspire staff to work to their fullest potential and make maximum use of the strong volunteer base of the council. EOE

    Job Qualifications

    The CEO will possess solid C-level business skills as well as demonstrated dedication and support for the advancement of young people. A minimum of 10 years senior level experience is desired, with five or more years of executive experience leading organizations through transformational change. In addition, we seek excellence across a broad range of executive and managerial functions, including financial management, fund development, business development, planning, board relations, staff/volunteer relations, and the use of social media for business communications. It is expected that candidates will possess a minimum of an undergraduate degree or equivalent mix of education, training, and experience with advanced education and training in fields relating to nonprofit leadership preferred.

    Personal attributes of the CEO will include a girl-centered attitude, dedication to the mission of Girl Scouting at all times, and the drive to be the voice for girls throughout the communities served. The CEO will be a person of strong ideals, integrity, and vision who has strategic and operational planning abilities and who can serve as a role model of best management practices and solid decision making.     Membership Marketing Specialist

    Position Summary:

    The Membership Marketing Specialist is responsible for developing, retaining, and increasing girl and adult membership in assigned geographic areas. The incumbent develops and implements plans for membership extension through the work of administrative volunteers and represents and extends Girl Scouting in the community through public relation and marketing efforts including presentations, collaborations, networking and customer service.

     

    Major Accountabilities

    1. Collaborates with interdepartmental staff for membership planning.
    2. Recruits volunteers to work with girls in a variety of settings using traditional and non-traditional means, including college service learning or department specific recruitment, focusing on a specific age group, such as 18 – 29 year olds and recent retirees.
    3. Community cultivation including development of collaborative opportunities for the purpose of adult and girl recruitment. 
    4. Provides information and interpretation of council and GSUSA policies and programs to reinforce the role of Girl Scouting.
    5. Recruits, trains, and provides on-going support, supervision, and direction to administrative volunteers in assigned geographic areas by interpreting GSUSA and council policies, standards, and procedures, and by ensuring the availability of support services to enable volunteers to carry out their jobs effectively.
    6. Encourages and supports service units and volunteers in their areas; ensure broad participation in the product sale program.
    7. Establishes and maintains contact with community organizations and educational institutions to deliver Girl Scouting to underserved girls and adults.
    8. Ensures Girl Scouting is open to all girls and adults by delivering the Girl Scout message of pluralism and diversity to members of the council and the community.
    9. Effectively identifies, analyzes, and solves problems, and successfully handles conflict resolution in assigned areas.
    10. Works closely with their Regional Manager to develop and administer membership team operating plan and budget to achieve the council’s objectives. 
    11. Works closely with the Regional Manager and Communication Department to develop and implement local marketing and public relations plans for the purpose of recruitment, showcasing the benefits of the GSLE, and ensuring a positive Girl Scout image.  These plans will be targeted, pro-active plans that align with the council’s strategic priorities.
    12. Participates in the development of objectives, action steps and budgets related to the MVP functions.
    13. Works in conjunction with the regional MVP team to develop, support, and achieve regional and local strategies and goals.
    14. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Leadership & Learning Specialist for the Girl Leadership Experience Pathways Focus

    Jefferson City, Missouri

     

    Position Summary:

    The Leadership Learning Specialist for the Girl Scout Leadership Experience works within a designated region and is responsible for ensuring the delivery of the national leadership curricula and for customizing, enriching, and supplementing it as needed for different venues. She/he plans for and/or participates in work involving consultation and support to the local level of Girl Scouting, quality specifications, and outcomes assessment. Works collaboratively with Leadership Learning Specialists for Volunteerism to create strategies, resources and tools to support volunteer utilization of national program curricula and delivery of their assigned pathway for the council jurisdiction.

    1. Participates in the development and implementation of a total market driven membership plan that serves present and future needs of current and prospective girl members and expands membership in untapped and underserved markets through various pathways. 
    2. Collaborates in the development of a marketing plan, community assessment and cultivation strategies that support assigned pathway(s) or project(s) across the council jurisdiction.
    3. Works with key volunteers and staff to develop and implement an integrated leadership program experience delivery plan.
    4. Uses the national leadership curricula to customize, supplement, and enrich it via local partnerships, development of local resources, and topic area experts to meet the needs, interests and preferences of current and prospective girl members and ensure support for local Girl Scout programming.
    5. Applies knowledge of national program and local supplemental possibilities to a variety of specialized tasks, including selection of delivery methodology and development of supporting program practices and procedures to meet stated program quality measures and goals as outlined in the overall leadership program experience delivery plan; researches and ensures compliance with regulatory guidelines.
    6. Prepares activities that utilize the national curricula or enrich and supplement it, ensuring diversity in program opportunities for all girls and working to engage volunteers to carry the activities forward.
    7. Promotes Girl Scouting in the community to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience; increases the visibility of Girl Scout opportunities/programs for girl using traditional and non-traditional methods.
    8. Ensures that both council and local program offerings are tied to the national program portfolio and customized, enriched, and enhanced based on girls’ needs, interests and pathway variables; ensures that outcome studies are performed on all program offerings. 
    9. Participates in the development of objectives, action steps and budgets related to the MVP functions.
    10. Works in conjunction with the regional MVP team to develop, support, and achieve regional and local strategies and goals.
    11. Performs other duties as assigned.

     

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    Manages a core team of program volunteers. Responsibilities include recruiting and training volunteers; directing work and coaching to support quality program delivery; work to address complaints and resolve problems.

     

    Position Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in related field such as leisure service management or experience commensurate with degree; at least two years strong skills and proven success in nonprofit program development; in-depth understanding and ability to articulate the meaning of providing support to Girl Scouting at the local level; thorough knowledge of the Girl Scout program and the guiding principles preferred; knowledge of community organizations and ability to cultivate collaborative relationships with key community leaders; strong human relations skills such as leadership, recruiting, networking and ability to effectively manage volunteers; demonstrated ability to successfully handle conflict resolution at all levels with a variety of people, including staff, external customers, Girl Scout volunteers, etc.

    Position Summary:

    The Product Program Specialist is responsible for planning, organizing and implementation of the council product program strategies and campaign in their assigned region. This position promotes, markets and coordinates the Girl Scout product programs and sells Girl Scout merchandise to members and the public. Incumbent is also responsible for the planning and implementation of Council-sponsored programs activities and events throughout a specified Council Region.


    Major Accountabilities

    1. Implements all components of the product program within a geographic region, while also working as a member of the product program team throughout the council jurisdiction.
    2. Works closely with the Marketing/PR Specialist to disseminate information to the community about Girl Scout products.
    3. Assists with the collections of all product program funds, ensuring that all delinquent accounts are settled.
    4. Recruits, trains and supervises a core team of volunteers to promote product programs.
    5. Designs and delivers product program training to staff and volunteers.
    6. Manages cookie cupboards, including: inventory management; advising on order totals for region; stocking of product; as well as scheduling of staff and volunteers.
    7. Works closely with other staff and/or departments within the council to disseminate information and provide customer service to product program volunteers.
    8. Assists with data entry of product program orders.
    9. Works with various product program vendors, including delivery agents and product program sales representatives.
    10. Plans and implements council-sponsored activities, events and programs throughout the year. Twenty percent of their job will be spent on these duties.

    Maintenance and upkeep of council property.

    The Ranger is responsible for ensuring the usability of a particular council property by performing maintenance and ensuring safety regulations are met.

    1. Performs ongoing facilities, grounds and equipment maintenance in accordance with council standards and maintenance plan.
    2. Performs regular security checks to ensure the safety of individuals on-site and to protect council property.
    3. Conducts regular site inspections and reports findings to the property manager.
    4. Maintains daily written log of work performed and time spent on each job; prepares monthly summary report of all work activities.
    5. Prepares site for users by putting up tents, turning on water and/or heat; provides assistance to site users by responding to maintenance requests in a timely manner and by supplying other site needs. 
    6. Registers all site users upon entering and exiting site; meets with site users to obtain number of users and facility needs.
    7. Conducts walk through on arrival at lodges and/or cabins.
    8. Conducts walk through with checklist of buildings used, ensuring cleanliness of facility on user’s departure.

    Primary Role:

    To plan and direct the operation of resident camp while working within the framework of the Girl Scout Program, policies, standards, plan of work, and budget.

    Graphic Design Intern

    Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland (GSMH) is a non-profit organization, which is an independent corporation, chartered by Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.  The corporate office is located in Springfield, Missouri and the geographic jurisdiction includes 68 Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma counties.

    The council provides leadership development opportunities to girls in grades K-12, appoints adult leadership and provides program opportunities. To ensure high-quality programs, it provides training, resources and guidance to the adult volunteers.

    Marketing/Brand Manager

    The Marketing/Brand Manager will provide a broad range of marketing, brand and communications support to the organization. The incumbent is responsible for making sure that the council’s brand image aligns with council and GSUSA’s strategic priorities.

     

    Major Accountabilities: 

    1. Collaborates with interdepartmental staff for communications support planning and implementation.
    2. Collaborates with all departments to execute marketing and brand strategies, including social media strategies, that promote council services, a positive brand image, and supports various departmental needs; provides communication support planning and implementation. 
    3. As developer of print and online newsletters, collaborates with other departments, writes and produces publications targeted to girls, donors, volunteers, and agency partners. Manages the timely production and distribution of all publications.
    4. Uses graphic design programs to design council publications, marketing materials and website graphics.
    5. Works particularly close with the MVP department to develop regional and local level marketing plans for the purpose of recruitment, showcasing the benefits of the GSLE, and ensuring a positive Girl Scout image. Marketing plans should be proactive and support the strategic and operational plans of the council.
    6. Develops branded tools, templates and guidelines for both staff and volunteers; trains staff and volunteers on the importance of brand and the use of these materials; develops and manages a user-friendly system(s) by which these materials will be distributed.

    Assistant Unit Leader

    This is a temporary/seasonal position, and will live at campsite during camp season.

    Location: Joplin/Rogersville camps

    Reports to: Resident Camp Manager

    Position Summary

    To assist the Unit Leader in planning, teaching, and coordinating unit activities. Act for the Unit Leader in her absence.

     

    Major Accountabilities: 

    1. Assist Unit Leader in providing guidance to the girls in the unit, helping them to adjust to the camping environment and teaching them to respect the rights of others while promoting high moral character.
    2. Help in teaching camping skills and appreciation for the out-of-doors.
    3. Assist Unit Leader in general supervision of girls in their daily activities and experiences in the unit through use of troop government, girl-led planning and the Girl Scout program portfolio.
    4. Assist the Unit Leader in promoting health and safety in the campers.
    5. Assist the Unit Leader in caring for unit supplies and equipment, informing her of repairs that need to be made or supplies that need to be requested.
    6. Assist the Unit Leader in keeping badge records and doing paperwork.
    7. Helps supervise unit housekeeping and sanitation.
    8. Be involved in closing of the unit, completing the final inventory, evaluation and clean-up.

     

    Other Job Duties:

    • Participate in all-camp and sign-up activities.

    Health Supervisor

    Location: Joplin/Rogersville camps

    Reports to: Resident Camp Manager

    Position Summary

    The Health Supervisor is responsible for managing the general health and safety of campers and staff. Health Supervisor lives on site during camp, but we will consider applicants who can only be on site during the day.

     

    Major Accountabilities: 

    1. Check the living quarters and camp facilities daily for health and safety conditions. 
    2. Administer all medications and treatments and keep records of all such treatments.
    3. Provide first aid in life-threatening emergencies until medical assistance arrives.
    4. Report all treatments to the Resident Camp Manager at a predetermined time, unless emergency treatment warrants immediate notification.
    5. Prepare first aid kits and distribute them to units, replenishing them as necessary.
    6. Develop and implement system for health screening of campers on their arrival in camp and review all health records; discuss particular items at staff meeting.
    7. Be responsible for any drugs and medicines brought to camp, and administer as directed by physician of the camper/staff.

     

    Other Job Duties:

    • At close of camp season, complete final inventory (indicating what needs to be resupplied for following summer), clean-up of medical equipment and supply area, and evaluation.
    • At close of each session, provide a written statement for parents of any girls who have been treated for illness that needs to be brought to parents' attention.
    • Carry out other duties as assigned.

    Works with all camp staff and at times, council staff.

    Assist Unit Leaders with program ideas in implementation. ACM may assist manager in with employee problem solving, conflict resolution and discipline. Incumbent works with Senior Manager Leadership Program and other council employees.

    Qualifications:

    Minimum Education and Experience: Incumbent must be at least 21 years of age and have at least 2 years camp experience as a staff member in a leadership role. Experience in staff supervision preferred.

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

    Must meet requirements for adult membership in the Girl Scout organization, have knowledge and an interest in the program goals and missions of the Girl Scouts, with the ability to interpret and apply these principles. Have knowledge of girls and interest in service to youth. Have ability to work well, individually and in groups, with people of diverse knowledge and experience, and to enlist their cooperative effort. Have willingness to take necessary trainings for this position and have sufficient time (days, evenings, and weekends) to be flexible and available. Must enjoy being in the outdoors. Possess a current driver's license.

    Physical Demands:

    This position requires the ability to listen to others, observe others' actions, read text and information, comprehend instructions and manuals, physical ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds, move about the camp property in various environmental conditions, climb, stoop, kneel, bend, stand, lift, work with fingers, grasp, feel and talk.
