Property Update – July 30, 2010
Per the approved motion by the Board at the June 19th meeting, the Joplin Service Center was listed with a real estate agent on July 21st.

At a July 29th meeting, the board of directors passed a motion to request the postponement of the sale or listing of the Cape Girardeau and Dexter Service Centers.

As we continue the process of consolidating and restructuring our operations, we all remain focused on meeting the needs of girls today while ensuring a stable financial future of Girl Scouting for tomorrow.

Updates will continue to be provided in the Volunteer Connections newsletter and on this Web page as they become available. If you have questions or concerns in the meantime, please email .

Property Update – June 21, 2010

One of the Board of Directors' responsibilities is to monitor our council resources and make decisions on how we can best use those resources to support the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, yet remain within the council's ability to fund and maintain our resources. To help achieve this objective, a council property committee was established in April 2009 and charged with developing a recommendation to the board regarding the administrative properties of the council (Phase I) and a long-range plan for our program center properties (Phase II).

For Phase I, the property committee began carefully examining the cost of running each of the five service centers with respect to staffing needs and safety, girl potential in all areas and resources available to the council. At the last property committee meeting, an official proposal for Phase I was voted on, and approved, by the committee. This proposal was then presented to the Board of Directors on Saturday, June 19, and the Board approved the plan.

The board-approved property committee proposal includes selling the Joplin Service Center and leasing a satellite office building in Joplin that will house staff, a retail shop and allow members to drop off paperwork. Additionally, operations for the Cape Girardeau and Dexter services will be consolidated. Both the Cape Girardeau and Dexter service centers will be sold and an office building in the Cape vicinity will be leased or purchased. It will house staff, a retail shop and also allow members to drop off paperwork. The Springfield and Jefferson City service centers will not be changing at this time.

Unfortunately, the exact timeline for the change is not known. There are many factors to be considered including length of time the properties are on the market and locating purchase or lease sights that are visible, adequately sized and provides a safe location. The properties will be listed within the next month, and this summer/fall a plan will be developed indicating where staff positions will be located in order to best serve our membership.

These decisions were not made lightly. The committee worked on this for 14 months, and both the property committee members and the members of the board of directors understand the emotional aspects of these decisions. Volunteers, parents and girls will continue to have the full support of council services with programs, trainings, assigned membership staff, and council-sponsored programs in these areas. Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland also has a Web site at girlscoutsmoheartland.org with all of the forms, applications, and shop items that volunteers, girls and parents may need.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email .
